Urinary Excretion of Methanol and 5-Hydroxytryptophol as Biochemical Markers of Hangover
نویسنده
چکیده
Besides the acute effects of ethanol on a person's performance and behavior, the after-effects of heavy drinking, commonly referred to as the hangover state, causes impairment o f mental and body functioning, such as fatigue, attention deficit, and diminished psychom otor skills (Kelly et al., 1970; Seppala et al., 1976; Lemon et al. 1993). It seems likely that many accidents on the roads and in the workplace might be attributed to decreased attention and slower reaction time associated with the residual effects o f an evening’s heavy drinking (Karvinen et al., 1962; Tornros and Laurell 1991; Roehrs et al., 1994). Although neither dose-response relationships nor the prevalence of hangover have been clearly established, experience has shown that a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) should exceed approximately 1.0 g/L during the acute phase of intoxication (Smith et al., 1983; Collins and Chiles 1980). The hangover starts to develop when the BAC decreases again and is approaching zero. However, the intensity and duration of hangover shows large interand intra-individual variations and the reduced performance in some people might persist for many hours after all ethanol has been cleared from the body (Goldberg, 1961).

Laboratory testing for recent alcohol consumption: comparison of ethanol, methanol, and 5-hydroxytryptophol.
The ratio of 5-hydroxytryptophol to 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5HTOL/5HIAA) in urine was compared with concentrations of ethanol and methanol as a way to monitor recent alcohol consumption. During detoxification of alcohol-dependent subjects, ethanol persisted longer in urine than in breath or plasma. Blood and urinary methanol remained increased for 2-6 h after blood ethanol had returned t...
متن کاملComparison of self-reported alcohol intake with the urinary excretion of 5-hydroxytryptophol:5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid, a biomarker of recent alcohol intake.
Under-reporting of alcohol intake has been frequently reported. However, due to the lack of an objective reference method, e.g. a biomarker, information about the extent of under-reporting of alcohol intake obtained with dietary assessment instruments is not available. The objective of this study was to compare reported alcohol intake data derived from a 24 h recall with a biomarker of recent a...
متن کاملEffects of Methanolic Extract of Oxystelma esculentum on Diuresis and Urinary Electrolytes Excretion in Rats
The diuretic activity of methanol extract of Oxystelma esculentum aerial parts (MEOE) was studied in male Wister albino rats at 5h and 24h interval. The animals were divided into 5 groups: control, urea, furosemide and 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg MEOE. The extract was administered intraperitoneally (i.p) pretreated and all animals were saline MEOE. The urine volume (in mL) and electrolytes excretio...
متن کاملESTIMATION OF POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, AND MAGNESIUM IN BLOOD AND MYOCARDIAL TISSUE, AND DIAGNOSTIC IMPORTANCE OF URINARY MAGNESIUM EXCRETION IN EXPERIMENTALLY-INDUCED MYOCARDIAL INJURY
The results obtained in the present investigations point to a definite correlation between the onset of myocardial injury, electrocardiographic changes and biochemical changes. Changes in the electrocardiogram and elevated serum levels were paralleled by an increased excretion of magnesium in urine as early as one hour. Serum calcium and serum potassium levels did not show any significant ...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Descurainia sophia against Gentamicin Induced Nephrotoxicity in Rats
Several studies have tried to find an efficient agent to prevent or reverse gentamicin (Gm) induced acute kidney injury (AKI). In this study, we assessed the potential renal protective effects of Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb ex Prantl against Gm-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Thirty-five male Wistar rats were categorized in five groups (n = 7 per group). Control group was treated with...
